Work will always be work, but it’s a heck of a lot better If you can find something that you enjoy doing. If you can find a job that you like doing AND you have great coworkers, you’ve hit the jackpot!  Let’s face it, there’s almost always going to be at least one coworker that you can’t stand. There is a multitude of reasons for why you may not get along with a coworker. Are they a Debbie Downer? Do they gossip? Are they rude to you? Maybe they are just plain lazy! Whatever the reason may be, these simple tips can help you make it through the day.

Focus on your work.

Your job is more important than the latest rumor or complaint that your coworker has to tell you. If you find yourself constantly being interrupted by a coworker, try letting them know politely that you have work to do. You can say something like “I’ve got a ton of phone calls to make this morning, can we talk at lunch?” You may have to do this quite a few times before they understand that you aren’t interested in chatting or gossiping with them.

Don’t let them get to you.

Do you ever come in to work in a great mood ready to take on the day, only to have your negative coworker instantly bring you down? This can be a huge damper on the workday! It’s best to ignore this negative behavior and try not to let it get to you. Their negativity is not because of you, so don’t let them drag you down with them. If ignoring them is not working, try to keep your responses as light as possible so you don’t encourage or engage in their negative behavior.

If all else fails, tell a supervisor

If your coworker is so bad that you dread going to work, that is a serious problem and needs to be dealt with. If they are so lazy that you end up doing all of their work, that is not fair to you or sustainable in the long run. In extreme circumstances, you may even feel unsafe around a coworker. This is never okay and should be brought to the attention of your supervisor immediately.
