As a staffing agency, we are always looking for candidates to fill our open jobs. We currently have over 1,300 resumes on file from this year alone. That’s a lot of resumes to look through! It can be easy to get overlooked with that many resumes to compete with. Luckily, there are several things that you can do to set yourself apart from the crowd.

Use proper formatting

A resume typed up on Notepad or handwritten on loose leaf is extremely difficult to read, so make sure your resume is either a Word document or a PDF. This may sound obvious, but make sure you include your name and a phone number at the top of the resume so that the employer can reach you.

Keep it short and sweet

Nobody is going to read through a six page resume-NOBODY!  Ideally, your resume should fit on one page, but one to two pages is fine. The recruiter should be able to quickly scan your resume to see that you are qualified for the job.

Spell check!

Use proper grammar, complete sentences, and correct spelling. This is always a good idea but is especially important if you are applying for a position where written communication plays a major role, such as an Office Assistant.

Highlight your relevant qualifications

Applying for a Warehouse job? Highlight your forklift skills! Applying for an Office Manager job? Highlight your payroll skills! Utilize the skills section to quickly show the employer that you meet the job requirements. Make sure to list the actual job assignment and not just the agency if you’ve done primarily temporary work.

Keep it professional

Your age, gender, marital status, and number of children are not relevant and should never be included on a resume. Stick to the pertinent information like education, skills, and work experience.
