More companies than ever are using staffing agencies and hiring candidates on a temp to hire basis. Why are they doing this? The biggest reason is to ensure that the candidate is a good fit for the company (and vice versa!). One of the biggest issues that comes up during the temporary assignment is attendance. The two most common reasons for calling off are being sick or having an appointment. Here are solutions to reduce your call offs for these reasons:
- If you need to call off due to a doctor’s visit, court hearing, or other important appointment, first see if it’s possible to schedule it around work hours. For example, if you work second shift try to schedule your appointments for the morning. If you work office hours (8am to 5pm) try to schedule for either the earliest or the latest appointment so that you miss as little work as possible. For most companies, working a half day or missing a couple of hours is better than not working at all that day!
- What if you wake up sick? First, try and gauge just how sick you are. Is it a cold that you can work through, or are you physically unable to get out of bed? If you are truly sick then you should absolutely stay home- especially if you work in food service! In many cases you may still be able to work even if you are feeling a bit under the weather. If your illness causes you to sleep in past your alarm, just give your employer a call and explain. Not calling them will only make matters worse and possibly result in termination.
Having good attendance will not only improve your paycheck, but it will improve your odds of being hired on at the end of the temporary period. Employers are looking for dedicated workers who show that they can be on time every day.
